Early American History Pack - Curriculum Giveaway

Founded upon the idea that men could join together to shape a “more perfect union” and determine how they were to be governed, the United States occupies a unique place in the history of the entire world. In this course, your student will be introduced to the key principles and concepts that shaped our nation. Beginning with the establishment of the Iroquois League of Peace nearly 1000 years ago and moving forward through the Age of Discovery, the colonial period, the Revolutionary War, and into the nineteenth century, the stories of the men and women who shaped our nation demonstrate the power of ideas.

Your student will read award-winning books that tell the story of our country from a rich array of voices, develop critical reasoning skills, and hone their ability to look at history from multiple perspectives. Genevieve Foster’s “World” titles provide essential background information and can be used to expand this course to include world history using the included reference charts. Titles by Joseph Bruchac, Olaudah Equiano, James Daugherty, Andrea Rogers, Patricia McKissack and others tell the stories of courage, determination, sacrifice, and character that shaped our national conscience and propel us to continue to pursue “a more perfect union”.

The included teacher guide, designed for 7-9th grade, features assignments, research and creative writing projects, discussion and narration prompts to encourage critical thinking, curated reading lists for digging deeper, character connections, activities and handicraft, and more. This guide allows you, in the words of Charlotte Mason, to “spread the feast” for your child to delight in the accounts of great men and women and to learn from the triumphs and mistakes of the past.

Master Storyteller - Crew Review

Disclaimer: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Christian Heroes: Then & Now chronicles the exciting, challenging, and deeply touching true stories of ordinary men and women whose trust in God accomplished extraordinary exploits for His kingdom and glory. I have written several reviews for YWAM Publishing so when I had the opportunity to review another book from this series; I selected C.S. Lewis: Master Storyteller.

Clive Staples Lewis, who insisted everyone call him Jack, always had a lively imagination. Since the day he learned to write, he began recording stories. Two weeks after his mother’s death, Jack was sent off to school in England where the headmaster ruled the Wynyard House School like a mad sea captain. Upon closure, Jack enrolled at Campbell College where his English teacher introduced him to poetry. Later he won a classical entrance scholarship to Malvern College. Jack continued his education through 1946 when University of St. Andrews awarded him a doctor of divinity degree making him Dr. C.S. Lewis.

Jack also served in the trenches of World War One. After four weeks of basic training, he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Somerset Light Infantry where he faced the grim reality of life on the battlefield. During this time, he wrote poems about his experience; but it wasn’t until he was recuperating in the hospital when he had time to edit these poems written in the trenches. When his poems “Spirits of Bondage” were published in book form he became a published author.

Jack was thirty-three years old when he became a Christian. His first book about a religious theme, The Pilgrim’s Regress, was not a financial success. The story of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe received mixed reviews, but as more and more children read the book, sales began to grow. Each December, for the next six years, he published a new book in the series The Chronicles of Narnia.

In 1957, C.S. Lewis’s life turned upside down. He was now married to a terminally ill woman. Jack always kept his private life separate from his public life, so I was surprised to read that he wrote a deeply personal book that described his feelings following Joy’s death – A Grief Observed. Then on November 22, 1963 his kidneys had failed him; but the master storyteller’s death was overshadowed by another death, John F. Kennedy.

YWAM Publishing has a Unit Study Curriculum Guide to accompany this book. The Unit Study Curriculum Guide shows the homeschool parent ways to teach each chapter. Key Quotes display quotes and discuss their meaning and relevance to the historical character. Display Corner allows students to collect items from the time and place in which the character lived to create a display. Chapter Questions have your student answer questions for each chapter. Student Explorations are based on your student’s learning style and allow them to complete a project for each chapter. Community Links provide ideas for guest speakers and field trips. Social Studies uses maps and timelines to mark the locations listed in the book and record the list of events on the timeline. Books and Resources provides a collection of books, articles and movies for further study of the Christian Heroes character.

Abraham's Sacrifice

Last week we learned that God would bless Abraham and Sarah with a son. Today, we will read about the birth of Isaac and Abraham’s sacrifice. Abraham’s faith was tested when the Lord asked him to sacrifice Isaac on an altar. At the last moment, when Abraham displayed his willingness to obey God, an angel told him to stop, and the Lord provided a ram in a thicket. Use this slideshow presentation as you read through the Bible lesson with your children.

Slide 2 – Genesis 17:5

Slide 3 – Genesis 21:1-4

Slide 4 – Genesis 21:5-8

Slide 5 – Genesis 22:1-2

Slide 6 – Genesis 22:3

Slide 7 – Genesis 22:4-5

Slide 8 – Genesis 22:6-8

Slide 9 – Genesis 22:9

Slide 10 – Genesis 22:10-12

Slide 11 – Genesis 22:13-14

Slide 12 – Genesis 22:15-18

Today’s key verse and Bible verse for the week is Genesis 22:13 – And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and behold him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

We finished class time with a craft and a worksheet.

The End: A Bible Prophecy Study for Teens - Crew Review

Disclaimer: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

For the last several weeks, Isabelle and I have been studying eschatology with The End: A Bible Prophecy Study for Teens by Cheri Fields. This study walks you through the Old Testament prophecies before it goes through the book of Revelation. If you have ever studied the book of Daniel, then you have read about the empire statue. I liked how Cheri shares each symbol with each empire animal. Gold represents the Babylonian empire with a winged lion. Silver represents the Medo-Persian empire with a bear. Bronze represents the Grecian empire with a leopard. Iron represents the Roman empire with a “terrible” animal that doesn’t compare to a real-world animal. Studying the vision of Daniel, prepares you for your study of Revelation where the Ancient of Days is taking over and handling the eternal kingdom to the Son of Man. Through this study, you will see what happens to the world empires after God takes control. You will also study some woes with the key verses that explain why God sends this kind of destruction on the earth.

As you read through this study, it’s as if Cheri is speaking directly to you. She really has a way of speaking to teens, getting to their level, to keep their interest. For example, “Whichever way this works out, these dudes collect an army of 200 million to help them.” (The End, 76). This book simply shares what she taught her own teens: how to take the Bible for what it is without filtering anything out because of what people have taught us. It is a living book. Parents will only know their student’s comprehension of the book through discussion.

Cheri even causes you to think through the timeline of End Time events as you study. For example, war is a big part of death; but she notes that it is important to think through what does all these people in: sword, famine, plague, and wild animals. Each verse for study that is mentioned is in bold letters and noted with capitalization if it is a KEY to understanding the timeline of End Time events. Cheri pinpoints the pivot point in history when common events are suddenly extraordinary events so that everyone knows it’s God who is doing them – a great earthquake, the sun is darkened, the moon turns deep red, the stars fall, heaven is rolled up like a scroll, and all mountains are moved.

Studying the future excites our imaginations. Many people seek out ways to find out what is going to happen, and we even have movies about the world being destroyed. Any worldview system wide enough to shape a whole life has to answer the ultimate questions of both our beginnings and the end of history. God knows this and gives us solid answers to both, preparing us for the distant future.

Father Abraham

This lesson was a fun one for our little ones! Before class began, I had created a tent in the Fellowship Hall. We began class in our Sunday School room reading Genesis 12:1-5 about the call of Abram; and Genesis 12:6-9 about his departure from Haran. Then we went on our own journey to the tent, and I shared with the group that Abram had to rebuild his tent every time he traveled from one place to the next and discussed how he would build his tent. After we were all inside the tent, we continued our lesson reading Genesis 13:1-11 about Abram and Lot. As Abram and Lot went their separate ways, we left the tent, and journeyed back to our Sunday School room. Here we continued our lesson reading Genesis 13:12 where Abram dwells in Canaan, Genesis 17:1-4 where God renewed His covenant with Abram, Genesis 17:5 where God changed his name to Abraham, Genesis 17:15 where God changed his wife’s name to Sarah, and Genesis 17:16-19 where they were both blessed with a son. To help get out the wiggles, we paused our lesson to sing the song “Father Abraham” with motions.

We finished with a review using a craft. God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations (big family), that he would dwell in the land of Canaan, and that he would have a son.

I challenge you to join the kids and me in memorizing this week’s Bible verse (the kids receive a prize for telling me their verses each week)! Genesis 17:5 – Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
