Jacob Goes to Haran

 

This lesson takes up where the story of Jacob, Esau and the Birthright left off.  After deceiving his father and brother, Jacob left his family home and made his way north to his mother’s relatives in Haran.   

Many important events happen on his trip to Haran, his life there and years later upon his return to face his brother.  The following events begin and end in Bethel. Use the slideshow images below as you read the story through Scripture.

In the lesson Jacob, Esau and the Birthright we were first introduced to the character of Jacob.  He had lived a life filled with jealousy and deception.  Our natural reaction to Jacob’s story might be that he does not deserve to receive God’s blessing and protection.  The story of Jacob, however, reminds us that God’s plans are not dependent on man’s behavior.  After all, because our sin nature, none of us deserve His blessings.  Instead, human imperfection is the backdrop of God’s perfection and amazing work. God had a plan for Jacob. Although he did not immediately move back to his former home where Esau lived, God eventually renewed his promise and told Jacob to go to Bethel, the place where Jacob dreamed of the ladder, so you see how these events began and ended in Bethel.

Today’s key verse and memory verse for the week is Genesis 33:4 – And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

Craft: Paint a Stone - Jacob chose a smooth stone for his pillow. Children can paint a smooth stone for parents to use a paper weight.

Abraham's Sacrifice

 

Last week we learned that God would bless Abraham and Sarah with a son. Today, we will read about the birth of Isaac and Abraham’s sacrifice. Abraham’s faith was tested when the Lord asked him to sacrifice Isaac on an altar. At the last moment, when Abraham displayed his willingness to obey God, an angel told him to stop, and the Lord provided a ram in a thicket. Father Abraham

 

This lesson was a fun one for our little ones! Before class began, I had created a tent in the Fellowship Hall. We began class in our Sunday School room reading Genesis 12:1-5 about the call of Abram; and Genesis 12:6-9 about his departure from Haran. Then we went on our own journey to the tent, and I shared with the group that Abram had to rebuild his tent every time he traveled from one place to the next and discussed how he would build his tent. After we were all inside the tent, we continued our lesson reading Genesis 13:1-11 about Abram and Lot. As Abram and Lot went their separate ways, we left the tent, and journeyed back to our Sunday School room. Here we continued our lesson reading Genesis 13:12 where Abram dwells in Canaan, Genesis 17:1-4 where God renewed His covenant with Abram, Genesis 17:5 where God changed his name to Abraham, Genesis 17:15 where God changed his wife’s name to Sarah, and Genesis 17:16-19 where they were both blessed with a son. To help get out the wiggles, we paused our lesson to sing the song “Father Abraham” with motions.

We finished with a review using a craft. God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations (big family), that he would dwell in the land of Canaan, and that he would have a son.

I challenge you to join the kids and me in memorizing this week’s Bible verse (the kids receive a prize for telling me their verses each week)! Genesis 17:5 – Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

Cain and Abel

OBJECT LESSON

Fill half a glass with water. This glass represents the heart of Abel. Put a teaspoon of baking soda in the glass. Notice there is no reaction because Abel did not react when the Lord accepted his offering.

Fill half a glass with white vinegar. This glass represents the heart of Cain. Put a teaspoon of baking soda in the glass. Notice the reaction because Cain reacted when the Lord accepted Abel’s offering. Just as the water bubbles, jealousy can bubble into anger. This anger caused Cain to kill his brother.

Adam and Eve

 

I recently began teaching Sunday School again and I have a class with multiple ages so I have to get creative each week. Let me begin by saying I allow Scripture to tell each story and I use visual aids for the little ones. Last week, we began with the story of creation, and yesterday, we read the story about Adam and Eve from Genesis 2:4 through Genesis 3:24. Here is the lesson with worksheets and craft.

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Days of Creation

 

Genesis is properly described as the book of beginnings. As we study the days of creation, we will see how everything was done decently and in order (I Corinthians 14:40). First, God formed the heaven and the earth; and then God filled them with life.

Day 1: Genesis 1:1-5

What does the word ‘create’ mean? To cause something to exist.

What did God create on the first day? Light.

How could there be light when the light-bearers were not created until day four of creation? Let’s dig deeper into God’s Word, according to I John 1:5, who is light? God is light.

Have you ever stopped to think why God divided the light from the darkness? God commanded the light to shine out of darkness (2 Corinthians 4:6) for what communion hath light with darkness (2 Corinthians 6:14). God’s people should walk in the light (I John 1:6-7).

God divided the light from the darkness by giving them distinguishing names – Day and Night. We should acknowledge God as we work for him every day and as we rest in him every night. As God’s people, we should meditate on his Word day and night (Psalm 1:2). Why? Because his Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105).

Day 2: Genesis 1:6-8

What did God create on the second day of creation? Firmament.

What did God call the firmament? Heaven.

God divided the waters so that there would be water and air. The water cycle describes how water evaporates from the surface of the earth, rises into the atmosphere, cools and condenses into rain or snow in clouds, and falls again to the surface of the earth as precipitation.

Day 3: Genesis 1:9-13

What did God create on the third day of creation? Land.

What did God call the land? Earth.

Day 4: Genesis 1:14-19

What did God create on the fourth day of creation? Lights in the firmament.

Why did God create the sun, moon, and stars? For signs and seasons.

Day 5: Genesis 1:20-23

What did God create on the fifth day of creation? Great whales, and every living creature in the water, and every winged fowl.

Day 6: Genesis 1:24-31

What did God create on the sixth day of creation? Living creatures after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth; and man.

God told man to “have dominion” over the earth. What does this mean? Man was given the responsibility to take care of the earth that God had created.

Day 7: Genesis 2:1-3

What did God do on the seventh day of creation? God rested.

Each day of creation was made decently and in order. Light had to come out of darkness, to show us our Creator. The firmament had to be created for the sea creatures and flying creatures. Land had to be created for cattle and man. God formed the heaven and the earth so he could fill them with life. How great is our God!
