Adventures in Phonics - Curriculum Giveaway

Adventures in Phonics Level A begins a formal study of phonics – starting with short vowel sounds and logically progressing through consonants, long vowels, and beyond. It uses drill, repetition, and writing activities to ensure comprehension. It is designed to work with their kindergarten phonics readers, which students are prompted to begin reading once the phonics concepts for a given title have been studied.

The four Kindergarten Phonics Readers are designed to complement Adventures in Phonics Level A. The first two readers emphasize single-syllable short vowel words. Simple consonant blends are introduced on a regular basis throughout the series. Each reader is filled with Christ-honoring stories that are one to three pages in length.

The Phonics Sounds & Teaching Tips CD provides phonics instructors with guidance in the correct pronunciation of each vowel and consonant sound. It also includes special tips for teaching beginning readers.

Adam and Eve

I recently began teaching Sunday School again and I have a class with multiple ages so I have to get creative each week. Let me begin by saying I allow Scripture to tell each story and I use visual aids for the little ones. Last week, we began with the story of creation, and yesterday, we read the story about Adam and Eve from Genesis 2:4 through Genesis 3:24. Here is the lesson with worksheets and craft.

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates. And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Triad Math - Tier 4

Today, thanks to new amazing 21st Century technologies, there is a Six Tier Math Program that homeschool parents can deliver to their children that is vastly superior from other online or video-based math programs. For only $29 per month, you get unlimited access to Tiers 1-6 and this includes enrollment for your entire family! Each lesson includes a pre-test, printable notes, a video lesson, printable exercises, and a post-test. In Tier 4, Dr. Del presents the following math curriculum:

PRE-CALCULUS

This course uses notes and George F. Simmons’ wonderful book, Precalculus Mathematics in a Nutshell, and delves further into geometry, algebra, and trigonometry. The geometry section covers triangles, polygons, circles, angles, cylinders, cones, and spheres. The algebra section conducts a review of Tier 3, then covers functions, graphs, polynomials, exponential functions, logarithms, analytic geometry, and the conic sections, circles, parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas, infinite series and much more. The trigonometry section covers trig functions and their graphs, frequency and phase, identities and their proofs, inverse trig functions, and the Laws of Sines and Cosines. Complex numbers are now treated properly in the appropriate modern mode where Euler’s Equation is the center piece of their development and geometric explanation. The modern tool Wolfram Alpha is introduced early in Tier 4 and revolutionizes the way most algebra and trigonometry problems are solved. This serves as a great preparation for Calculus where Wolfram Alpha truly revolutionizes how calculus problems are solved.

The student is expected to work along with Dr. Del while watching the video and fill in the notes provided with that video. Then the student works exercises until they understand the topic. In math, you either understand it or you don’t. There is no such thing as sort of understanding it. This takes time and repetition which varies for each student. This is why self-pacing is critically indispensable. The student then takes a short quiz to verify they understand the topic. Then they move on to the next topic. And, all of this is recorded in the student’s record which you can review any time. If a student works hard and watches the video at least three times and still cannot understand the topic, then Dr. Del will give the student an online tutoring session, or create a supplementary video on that topic. There is no extra charge for this. His goal is for any student to succeed and excel in this Six Tier Math Program!

Days of Creation

Genesis is properly described as the book of beginnings. As we study the days of creation, we will see how everything was done decently and in order (I Corinthians 14:40). First, God formed the heaven and the earth; and then God filled them with life.

Day 1: Genesis 1:1-5

What does the word ‘create’ mean? To cause something to exist.

What did God create on the first day? Light.

How could there be light when the light-bearers were not created until day four of creation? Let’s dig deeper into God’s Word, according to I John 1:5, who is light? God is light.

Have you ever stopped to think why God divided the light from the darkness? God commanded the light to shine out of darkness (2 Corinthians 4:6) for what communion hath light with darkness (2 Corinthians 6:14). God’s people should walk in the light (I John 1:6-7).

God divided the light from the darkness by giving them distinguishing names – Day and Night. We should acknowledge God as we work for him every day and as we rest in him every night. As God’s people, we should meditate on his Word day and night (Psalm 1:2). Why? Because his Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105).

Day 2: Genesis 1:6-8

What did God create on the second day of creation? Firmament.

What did God call the firmament? Heaven.

God divided the waters so that there would be water and air. The water cycle describes how water evaporates from the surface of the earth, rises into the atmosphere, cools and condenses into rain or snow in clouds, and falls again to the surface of the earth as precipitation.

Day 3: Genesis 1:9-13

What did God create on the third day of creation? Land.

What did God call the land? Earth.

Day 4: Genesis 1:14-19

What did God create on the fourth day of creation? Lights in the firmament.

Why did God create the sun, moon, and stars? For signs and seasons.

Day 5: Genesis 1:20-23

What did God create on the fifth day of creation? Great whales, and every living creature in the water, and every winged fowl.

Day 6: Genesis 1:24-31

What did God create on the sixth day of creation? Living creatures after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth; and man.

God told man to “have dominion” over the earth. What does this mean? Man was given the responsibility to take care of the earth that God had created.

Day 7: Genesis 2:1-3

What did God do on the seventh day of creation? God rested.

Each day of creation was made decently and in order. Light had to come out of darkness, to show us our Creator. The firmament had to be created for the sea creatures and flying creatures. Land had to be created for cattle and man. God formed the heaven and the earth so he could fill them with life. How great is our God!

National Puzzle Month

Puzzles have been around for centuries and they engage our brain in more ways than one. Whether it’s a jigsaw, crossword, or Sudoku, puzzles can assist mental stimulation therefore they can be useful tools for people of all ages to enhance concentration, brain function, and relaxation. In a study by puzzle manufacturer Ravensburger, 48% of Americans enjoy piecing together puzzles at least once a year. Why? Participants cited relaxation, stress relief, and family fun as their reasons for puzzling.

When we put together the pieces to a jigsaw puzzle, we use both sides of the brain. If we spend time daily working on puzzles, they will improve memory, cognitive function, and problem-solving skills.  Word searches and crossword puzzles have the obvious benefit of increasing vocabulary and language skills. Sudoku, a puzzle sequencing a set of numbers on a grid, exercises the brain as well. By testing memory and logical thinking, this puzzle stimulates the brain and can improve number skills.

January is officially known as National Puzzle Month and it’s the only month Barnes and Noble puts their puzzles on sale for buy one get one 50% off! Take advantage of this sale and enjoy some family fun on January 29 which is National Puzzle Day, the perfect day to do a little brain exercise.
