Rebecca Locklear, a twelfth-generation Cape Codder, writes
history-focused, interactive, educational books and resources. In her recent
book, The Surfman’s Daughter, we journey to a Cape Cod village in
Massachusetts to meet Roxane Eldredge in this short-story biography.
Spirited and inquisitive as a child, Roxane tries to be
good, but gets into scrapes. From pranks to starting a house fire, things go
awry. Yet she also exudes responsibility by trapping skunks and picking
cranberries to help with family finances and by volunteering at the Chatham
Naval Air Station during World War I. Roxane navigates humorous and serious
situations, sparkling with determination.
Each chapter is filled with personal stories that reflect
life in the early 1900s when people lived without electricity, provided their
own food, and their transportation was by horse or boat. Each chapter in The
Surfman’s Daughter concludes with conversation starters and provides
students with many hands-on activities. A must-read for all who love to learn
about history through literature.
