Motivating the Reluctant Learner

Today we are going to discuss the reluctant learner. There are two possible explanations for children who are reluctant to learn.

1. Their attitudes. Proverbs 22:15 reads "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him." In order to help our children, we need to replace this foolishness with wisdom.

2. Their abilities. There are two factors to look at here. Internally, your child may be a reluctant learner because his learning style is not being taught. Externally, your child may be a reluctant learner because of his learning environment.

So how can you motivate the reluctant learner?

1. Adapt to his learning style.
2. Assess your learning environment.
3. Evaluate your curriculum. Choose a curriculum that tailors to his learning style.
4. Speak positive affirmations - do all you can to show your confidence in him.
5. Use rewards - this just may show you he can really do mathematics because he is motivated to earn the reward.

Happy Homeschooling!
